Injection therapy

Soft tissue and joint injections

Soft tissue and joint injections are also referred to as corticosteroid or cortisone injections.

So, what are they and what would I need it for?

These injections are used for the treatment of joint pains, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, bursitis and many different conditions

The steroid that may be prescribed is either methylprednisolone (Depo-Medrone) or

triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog). The steroid can be injected on its own or in combination with a local anaesthetic. The local anaesthetic used in the clinic is called Lidocaine.

What does the steroid do?

Steroids are like cortisol which occurs naturally in the body. Steroids are man-made however these are not the same as anabolic steroids that may be used by athletes.

Steroid injections are essentially anti-inflammatory injections that are injected directly into the affected area.

They therefore reduce pain and swelling and reduce inflammation.
